When the Unthinkable Happens: Jerika’s Story of Rebuilding After the Flames

Written By Chris Stewart

Jerika and her husband are accepting donations directly through Venmo at @JerikaRodriguez or CashApp at $jerikaquick1. A GoFundMe and an Amazon Wishlist have also been set up to help them rebuild.

At The Good Network, we focus on people in our community doing good things, and when life hits hard, we make sure they’re not facing it alone.

Jerika knows what it means to rebuild. After surviving a severe domestic violence relationship that left her battling chronic illnesses, she fought hard to create a safe, stable life for herself and her 5-year-old son. She found love again, and just this past March, she and her husband were married. This was supposed to be the happiest time of their lives—a fresh start, a new chapter, a safe haven.

Then, two nights ago, the unthinkable happened.

Their home went up in flames. The fire tore through the house, destroying everything inside. Jerika, her husband, her 5-year-old son, and their roommates lost everything they had to their names.

"I got away and started rebuilding my life again," Jerika shared. "I am happy and I am recently married. Tonight, my house went up in flames and I lost everything again."

As if the devastation of the fire wasn't enough, the very next morning, Jerika was involved in a car accident.

When tragedy strikes this relentlessly, it can feel impossible to find a way forward. But Jerika and her family are not giving up. They are asking for help, for prayers, and for the community they have poured into to help them find their footing once more.

Now it’s our turn.

This is what community looks like. It’s not just celebrating the fresh starts—it’s showing up when those fresh starts are threatened by unimaginable loss.

A Reminder for Our Community: Fire Safety Matters

When we see the devastating aftermath of a house fire, it is a stark reminder of how quickly life can change. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), home fires account for 75% of all civilian fire deaths and injuries in the United States.

Today's home fires burn faster and hotter than ever before. A modern home fire can go from a small flame to a deadly flashover in just 3 to 5 minutes.

While we rally around Jerika's family, we also want to ensure our community stays safe. Here are crucial reminders we all need:

•Install Smoke Alarms: Place working smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside every bedroom, and outside each sleeping area. The NFPA reports that the risk of dying in a home fire is cut by 60% when working smoke alarms are present.

•Test Them Monthly: A smoke alarm only saves lives if it works. Test your alarms once a month and replace the batteries at least once a year.

•Have an Escape Plan: Ensure every member of your family knows two ways out of every room. Practice your escape plan twice a year.

•Get Out and Stay Out: If a fire starts, leave immediately. Never go back inside a burning building for belongings or pets.

This isn’t about fear. It’s about being prepared.
